The dependence of the luminosity function (LF) of white dwarfs on the progenitor mass function is investigated, with the aid of some assumptions for the birthrate of main-sequence stars. When dealing with a finite disk age - about 10 billion yr for nearby stars - at low luminosity, a departure of the LF of white dwarfs is found with respect to the LF obtained if a constant birthrate and deathrate are assumed, due to the fact that low progenitor masses cannot give rise at present to very low-luminosity white dwarfs. The importance of very good knowledge of white-dwarf lifetimes and of the relation between progenitor mass and mass and chemical structure of the remnant white dwarf is stressed. A tentative explanation of hot white dwarfs of different spectral types is given in terms of different progenitor masses.
