In his comment on the paper by Giggenbach (1992), Blattner (1993) accepts the most thermal waters from high-temperature geothermal and volcanic systems, associated with andesitic magmatism, show in addition to an oxygen-18 shift with respect to the isotopic composition of local meteoric waters, also a deuterium-shift. Rather than ascribing these 'shifts' to mixing of local meteoric waters with magmatic waters of comparatively uniform composition, Blattner attempts to provide an alternative explanation in terms of an apparently consistent pattern generated by isotopic exchange between local groundwater with oxygen and hydrogen present in the rocks contacted. The proposed explanation is based on a well-publicized model describing water-rock isotopic exchange processes in terms of the passage of more or less well-defined isotopic exchange fronts through a hydrothermal system. Depending on the magnitude of various kinetic and other parameters, the isotopic composition of the waters discharged at the surface are expected to follow, in delta D/delta O-18-plots, curved trajectories linking local meteoric waters to an isotopically enriched frontal water in isotopic equilibrium with both oxygen and hydrogen of the original, igneous or sedimentary host rock. These views are briefly discussed.
