The strongly oxidizing surface of Mars means that any ferrous clays have
lost hydrogen, forming oxy-clays that might be difficult to detect by
spectroscopy. This oxidation reaction has misleadingly been labelled
"dehydroxylation", which refers to thermal decomposition.
