Scientific paper

The origins of cosmic rays are discussed together with the techniques used to detect and study cosmic rays. Attention is given to detection strategies used in ground-based gamma-ray and cosmic-ray studies, the South Pole Air Shower Experiment (SPASE) which collected data on the SN 1987A, the Pilot South Pole Atmospheric Cerendov Experiment (P-SPACE), and the balloonborne Gamma-Ray Advanced Detector (GRAD) which collected data on the energy source powering the expansion of SN 1987A. While the SPASE, P-SPACE, and GRAD zero in on the sources of high-energy cosmic rays, the soon-to-be-launched Gamma Ray Observatory satellite will revolutionize studies at lower energies.
