A three-mode, nonlinear resonance interaction by which unstable perturbations trapped in deep layers would be transformed into either radial or nonradial pulsations of the whole star is discussed. Attention is given the presumed decay processes operating in Beta Cep variables, and a mechanism accounting for the origin of the 160-min oscillations observed by Severnyi et al. (1980) in the sun is suggested.
