A model for the dynamics of 'heavy' supersonic beams in extragalactic radio sources is described, and its consequences for interpreting data on the collimation properties of radio jets in galaxies and quasars are explored. The model assumes that nonrelativistic supersonic beams of hot fluid originate in the active central regions of radio galaxies and quasars, and describes the supersonic dynamics of these beams in a self-consistent way. In contrast with previous work, the beam cross section is solved for dynamically, considering the effects on the transverse expansion of the beam of (1) internal pressure, (2) external confining pressure, and (3) self-consistent magnetic fields in the flow.
