Zeeman absorption components are detected in the spectrum of the polar system V834 Cen during a low state. Their wavelengths indicate that they are formed in a region with a mean magnetic field strength of 22MG. The data can be fitted with a uniform effective temperature photospheric model which suggests a field strength at the magnetic pole of between 26 and 28MG. The spectral signature of the mass-donating companion star is detected in the red, and it has a spectral type of approximately dM6.5. The distance of the system is found to be greater than about 70 pc.
