Consideration is given to whether UV absorption by H2 in shocked regions well away from the edges of diffuse molecular clouds, such as the one observed toward Zeta Ohp, can affect its rotational level population distribution. Self-shielding of the J = 0, 1, 2 and 3 levels is found to be very important. Shielding by grains can reduce photoabsorption rates by up to a factor of about 4. Even if grain absorption were not very important and the radiation field incident upon the edge of the cloud near the shock were to have a strength comparable to that of the field incident on the Zeta Oph cloud, the populations in the hot shock gas of the J = 3-6 levels of H2 would not be reduced significantly by UV absorption. Photodissociation of H2 produces little atomic hydrogen in the shocked gas. These conclusions are of relevance to efforts to explain the measured CH(+) column densities with shock models which are constrained by the measured H2 rotational level populations.
