A comparison between the frequency dependences of the half power average pulse width and the subpulse separation supports the recent finding that the leading part of the PSR 0809 + 74 pulse profile is missing at about 0.1 GHz. This is a broadband phenomenon extending from about 0.05 to 2 GHz, i.e., over about one and a half frequency decades. It complicates accurate dispersion measure analyses, as fiducial points in the pulse profile may in extreme cases be situated even in the off-pulse region, so that in effect pure differential arrival time measurements of average pulse profiles may lead to a deviation from the inverse square of the frequency cold plasma dispersion relation. The results favor an interpretation in terms of cyclotron absorption of the incident radiation within the corotating magnetosphere in a distance of about 10 cm to the 9th from the star.
