In this paper a rediscussion is given of spectrographic and photometric observations of several eclipsing binaries belonging to the subclass of semi-detached systems. On the basis of this discussion the following model for these systems is proposed: a rapidly rotating primary, with equatorial rotational velocities of about 250 km/s; two tidal streams, arising from the surface of the primary at the tidal bulges and falling back on the star near the quadratures; a ring of gas around primary and streams and extending to the first Lagrangian point, and a secondary component filling its Roche lobe. The tidal streams are shown to come from layers below the stellar surface and are very irregular. Loss of angular momentum by the primary by means of magnetic fields gives a qualitative explanation of the observations. This model is suggested as being able to fill the secondary lobe of an originally detached system; its end product will probably be indistinguishable from that derived from stellar evolution theories. The relative importance of the two mechanisms cannot at present be estimated.
