Theoretical models of M giants with extended atmospheres which allow a significant percentage of the total mass to be included in the atmosphere are constructed for use in studying the evolution of red giants and AGB stars. The construction is attempted by solving the system consisting of the equations of hydrostatic equilibrium, mass conservation, moment, and transfer, by a modification of the Hummer and Rybicki (1971) method. The mass fraction above the photosphere obtained, especially for low-mass and high-luminosity models, is higher than the one estimated by Scholz and Tsuji (1984), who calculated models under the assumption that no significant mass is included above the photosphere.
