We report the results of a multi--wavelength study of the transient X-ray source and black hole candidate GRO J0422+32. Our observations included the first spectroscopic confirmation of the optical counterpart on 16 August, 1992, approximately 10 days post--outburst, followed by ultraviolet, optical, and radio observations throughout the remainder of 1992 and 1993 as the source faded to quiescence. Our observations included ultraviolet spectroscopy with IUE, low and high resolution optical spectroscopy and CCD photometry using the Perkins 1.8-m telescope and the 4.5-m MMT, and radio observations with the VLA at 1.49, 4.9, 8.4 and 14.9 GHz. A description and comparison of the UV, optical, and radio light curves as well as the form of the continuum energy distribution during the outburst will be presented. In addition, we will describe the results of extensive optical spectroscopy and photometry of J0422+32 during the outburst and decline in an effort to constrain the nature of the compact object and companion star. Comparisons with other soft X-ray transient black hole candidates such as A0620-00, V404 Cyg, and Nova Muscae 1991 will be presented.
