The Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) is one of three instruments onboard Suzaku, the fifth Japanese X-ray satellite, which covers a wide energy band of 10-600 keV with an unprecedented high sensitivity. The HXD consists of 16 well-type phoswich counters, in which four 2mm thick PIN-Si diodes and GSO scintillators are embedded at the bottom of the active shield made of BGO, located in a compound-eye configuration. In addition, they are surrounded by 20 units of BGO active shield which also act as a wide-band all-sky monitor (WAM). In this presentation, we will report the current status of the hardware together with the calibration issues, and summarize the in-orbit performances which have been achieved during the first verification phase.
