Scientific paper

We consider a mass distribution in the cluster A2218 which is consistent with the observed giant arcs and the X-ray surface brightness. It is confirmed that the central giant elliptical galaxy plays an important role in the gravitational lens effect and the X-ray emitting gas distribution, and that the giant galaxy mainly contributes to the mass within the core radius of the cluster, but the cluster component outside of the core radius dominates in the total mass. For the X-ray surface brightness, it is shown that the observed data can be reproduced theoretically in a model having a gas distribution such that its temperature increases toward the center.
