A new paradigm has emerged in the last decade for understanding how galaxies cluster spatially in the Universe, based on our improved understanding of the abundance and clustering properties of dark matter halos and their constituent dark substructures. I review basic aspects of these models for galaxy clustering, which are accurate both in the linear and non-linear regimes, and show how they can be used to place limits on the relationship between galaxies and their host dark matter halos. I will also discuss the implications of the evolving galaxy--halo connection for the stellar mass buildup and star formation rates in galaxies, and discuss how this framework can be used to understand the connections between galaxies at different epochs and wavelengths.
