Progress in observational techniques is allowing us to study high-redshift galaxies to the same degree of detail possible in the past only for galaxies in the local universe. I will briefly describe work in progress in three fields: (i) the fundamental plane for ``field'' elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshift, ii) the study of the properties of Extremely Red Objects, and (iii) the use of emission line diagnostics to study the properties of the interstellar medium of star forming galaxies at high redshift. Finally, with the help of theoretical models and detailed instrument simulation, I will discuss the potential impact of the Next Generation Space Telescope on the study of the internal properties of high-redshift galaxies and how these will affect our view on how galaxies form and evolve.
