We calculate the angular power spectra of cosmic microwave background anisotropies induced by active perturbations and compare them to perturbations of quantum origin generated during an inflationary era. We confront the theoretical predictions to current measurements of the CMB, in order to discriminate among the various models which could address the origin of the large scale structure in the universe.
