The mechanism for producing massive runaway stars proposed by A. Poveda,
J. Ruiz and C. Allen, 1967, BOTT, 4, 28, 86, is briefly described. Its
impact over the years and its gradual acceptance as a viable way to
account for such stars are traced. Its current relevance for the
understanding of runaway stars is assessed.
