The MECS instrument onboard BeppoSAX discovered a population of hard sources, many of them detected only above 5 keV, which account for the 35-40 percent of the cosmic X-ray background in the 5-10 keV band. We present results on the number density and X-ray spectrum of these sources, as well as preliminary results on an optical follow-up campaign, which show that the BeppoSAX hard sources are often associated with type 2 AGN or highly reddened type 1 AGN, supporting theoretical expectations.
