We show how results from ASCA and BeppoSAX observations of the dipping sources strongly constrain physical models for LMXBs. In sources such as XB 1 916-053 and XB 1323-619, spectral evolution during dipping is complex, with part of the spectrum clearly unabsorbed, and this has not been understood. Based on ASCA results, we proposed a progressive covering explanation of these sources in which an extended, dense absorber covers two emission regions: point source blackbody emission from the neutron star plus extended Comptonised emission from the ADC. The high quality BeppoSAX spectra extending from 0.1-200 keV show for the first time that the Comptonised component persists to high energies with a break energy of ~80 keV (for XB 1916-053) and confirm the progressive covering model.
