I will discuss the results of a study of black-hole X-ray binaries focusing on the types of donor stars observed in such systems. The donor properties are found to be constrained primarily by the evolutionary history of the binaries and much less by stability of mass-transfer considerations, contrary to the case of X-ray binaries with accreting neutron stars. Comparison with observations allows us to place quantitative constraints on the mass loss associated with both helium-star winds and the black-hole progenitors.
