The Cosmological blast wave model predicts the production of HE (> 10 - 100 GeV) gamma radiation in GRBs in two fundamentally different ways: a) by Compton scattering of soft photons (intrinsic synchrotron or external photons) off ultrarelativistic electrons or b) as a consequence of the acceleration of protons to ultrahigh energies (cosmic-ray protons). We investigate the spectral and temporal characteristics of HE gamma radiation from both classes of mechanisms and discuss their distinguishability by observations with low-threshold v Cerenkov telescopes or GLAST.
