In 1998 we discovered that the Soft Gamma Repeaters, SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14 are magnetars, i.e., young neutron stars with magnetic fields B > 1014 G. I will discuss the evidence that link SGRs and Anomalous X-Ray Pulsars (AXPs) to magnetars, in the framework of the neutron star crustquake model for SGR events developed in the early 90's.
