The history of time and frequency standards is reviewed, focusing on the importance of accurate time-scales for astronomy. The development of accurate clocks, the equation of time relating true solar time to mean solar time, and the establishment of dynamical time-scales derived from motion in the solar system are examined. The incorporation of relativistic effects and the differentiation between coordinate time and proper time are discussed. Also, consideration is given to the organizations responsible for time standards and the definitions of various time-scales, such as the associated time scale, coordinated universal time, barycentric dynamical time, and terrestrial dynamical time.
