High quality spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have enabled us to compile an unprecedented sample of 80,000 galaxies with active nuclei. This data has taught us a great deal about the rate at which black holes of different mass grow and the properties of the host galaxies in which black hole growth is favoured. By cross-correlating the SDSS galaxy sample with wide field surveys carried out at radio wavelengths, we have also been able to study the differences between radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN. In this talk, I will review the main results from from our ongoing program to study nearby AGN and their host galaxies.
