A treatment of the application of infrared spectropolarimetry to the study of the properties of dust grains and their environment, is given. The analysis of the extinction and polarization expected from an arbitrary grain model is outlined. Examples of some of the more recent observational work are presented in terms of their implications for dust grain physics and chemistry and the ambient magnetic field.
