Spectra of Mars are presented. They were recorded in September and October 1988, at the 1 meter telescope of the European Southern Observatory (Chile), between 2.8 and 5.2 microns with a circular variable filter and a resolving power of 60. Spectra were recorded at the center of the disk, the north region and the south pole with an aperture of 5 arcsec. In all the spectra, a strong absorption around 3 microns due to the OH bond in hydrated silicates, is observed. Weak absorption features seem to be superimposed at 3.4 and 3.8 microns in some spectra. Other absorption features are visible. An absorption feature appears around 5.0 microns, which probably indicates the presence of carbon monoxide chemically bound, on the martian surface.
