We have searched for the softest X-ray sources, the supersoft sample, in the 2XMM survey. Based on previous studies, this sample is likely to include AGN, starburst galaxies and isolated neutron stars. Follow-up observations of some candidates show that AGN comprise a significant fraction of the survey, including high redshift narrow-line Seyfert 1s. We present a summary of the current status of the project, including a description of the sample selection and the effect of detector noise on soft X-ray selected samples. We also present a cross-correlation analysis including a comparison with sources in the SDSS, Simbad and NED.
