We discuss high resolution VLBA 1.7 GHz monitoring observations of the M87 jet. Our monitoring began in Jan. 2005, a few months before the peak of the giant X-ray flare of knot HST-1 (0.86" = 60 pc projected from the nucleus) -- see companion contribution by Harris et al. We detect the jet out to 400 mas from the core and find no dramatic structural evolution over day, month, and year timescales in this portion of the jet. We find however, resolved dynamic structures within the flaring HST-1 knot. At least three superluminal (1.4c - 4.3c) features are traced apparently emerging from a stationary upstream feature. We discuss these results in the context of jet reconfinement at the location of HST-1, and implications for locating the production site of gamma-rays in more distant blazars.
