In the first lecture we shall consider the basic concepts of: what is a shock? what is required for a shock to form? and what parameters determine its structure. In the second lecture we will take up the question of how a collisionless (which we will define) shock can accelerate charged particles. We will show two different approaches to the problem and discuss a general principle for determining the energy limits of the process to see what maximum energy particles can be expected from various astrophysicsl objects or events.
