The Southern Auger Observatory has been in stable operation since January 2004 while growing in size. Even before reaching completion, it has recently opened the door to charged-particle astronomy by unveiling the anisotropy in the distribution of arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Identifying and understanding the highest energy accelerators will have important consequences to astrophysics and particle physics.
Auger North is planned for Southeast Colorado, USA, and is thought of as a couterpart to complete the sky coverage and increase the statistics of Auger South by a sizeable factor in spite of the steeply falling energy spectrum. We will discuss the layout and the implementation of the Northern Auger Observatory and its abilities for charged-particle astronomy.
