Over the last decade it has been firmly established that in classical bulges and elliptical galaxies the central velocity dispersion of stars is tightly correlated with the mass of the central supermassive black hole (the M_BH-sigma relation). Recent observations suggest that in contrast, neither barred galaxies nor pseudo bulges show as strong a correlation between M_BH and sigma. I will present a study of the nuclear stellar dynamics in a suite of N-body simulations designed to simulate the growth of supermassive black holes in barred disk galaxies as well as disk galaxies with classical bulges. The analysis reveals clues to the dynamical origin of the systematically higher values of velocity dispersion in barred galaxies.
