The joint NASA/DLR Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission is completing its 9th year of operation. In this time, measurements of Earth's gravity field variability from GRACE have provided remarkable insights into climate and human impacts on the global mass flux. The impact of the GRACE data has been felt across land, ocean, atmosphere and the cryosphere domains.
This paper surveys the conceptually simple GRACE measurement principles rooted in elementary celestial mechanics; the innovative satellite tracking technology within its implementation; and the various scientific applications and the related variety of orbital data analysis methods. After a summary of the present state, and the prospects for, the immediate future of GRACE mission, the presentation concludes with a discussion of plans for ensuring that this important climate data record remains robust and continuous in the coming decade.
