This paper is dedicated to the 100th birthday anniversary of academician S. N. Vernov. Academician Sergei Vernov (1910-1982), an outstanding Russian space physicist, was the first national scientist who initiated the cosmic ray programme and radiation studies onboard the first Soviet artificial satellites. He initiated the holding of All-Union conferences, seminars and winter schools on space physics and was the chairman of these events.
