Consideration is given to the relationship between Bergmann's (1968) and Wagoner's (1970) general scalar-tensor theory and Birkhoff's (1927) theorem that every spherically-symmetric vacuum field of gravitation must be static in general relativity. It is established that the time invariance of the scalar field is a sufficient condition for Birkhoff's theorem to hold in the Bergmann-Wagoner theory, both in vacuum and in the presence of an electromagnetic field.
