Neutrinos have zero electrical charge, spin-like electrons, and a negligible rest mass, and are emitted when a neutron decays into a proton. Neutrinos are theoretically produced in stellar interiors and supernovae. The latter would happen at a burst rate suitable for detecting supernovae by directional neutrino detection. A 100,000 gal underground tank filled with Cl-37 has for 15 years been used as a detector. The presence of the decay of an Ar-37 atom indicates that a neutrino has passed through the tank. At other locations, tilted liquid-filled detectors have permitted construction at shallower depths so that the neutrinos could be expected to pass through surface layers of the earth instead of at a normal incidence. No extra-terrestrial neutrino bursts have yet been recorded, and neutrino counts for a solar origin have been less than predicted. Another set of detectors, the Deep Underwater Muon and Neutrino Detector system, is being constructed and will consist of 36 strings of 21 photomultiplier tubes 1000 ft under the surface of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Significant results are anticipated once the construction of the many planned detectors is completed.
