The positions of H II regions in spiral galaxies are an indicator of the recent loci of star-formation events. Analysis of these positions shows that the variance of their separations is a useful index of their degree of orderliness. For galaxies with well-organized arms, the ratio of the variance to the mean is large, while for galaxies without clearly-defined arms the ratio is close to the value for a random distribution of points. Values are given for ten galaxies for which sufficiently large numbers of measured H II region positions are available. For some cases the variation of the variance with radius is illustrated.
