The accuracy of photographic photometry is critically dependent upon the procedures used for photometric calibration. A simple procedure for the photometric calibration of photographic plates using of a Lyot filter is described. Having just two entrance slits, the Lyot filter element utilized the birefringence of a quartz plate in conjunction with polarizers to produce a spectrum whose intensity varies quasi-sinusoidally as a function of wavelength.
