The composition and equation of state of cold catalyzed matter below neutron drip is calculated. The binding energies of nuclei are calculated using the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov scheme with an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. The effect of neutron shells in very neutron-rich nuclei turns out to be much weaker than that obtained using semiempirical mass formulas.
