Spectrophotometric observations of optical energy distributions for Be stars obtained at 10 A spectral resolution are analyzed in terms of properties of the central stars and their circumstellar envelopes. In order to explain the observed spectra, contributions of three different components are considered: radiation emitted from the photosphere of the central star according to its spectral type and luminosity class; additional emission from a circumstellar envelope or absorption of wavelength-dependent fractions of stellar photospheric radiation by the envelope; and modification of the combined Be star spectrum by the influence of interstellar extinction on the Be star spectrum. An attempt is made to determine and separate the effects of these three different contributions to observed optical energy distributions for a sample of 26 typical early-type Be stars.
