The energy distribution of secondary pions arising from photon-proton collisions is calculated. It is shown that a rising p-gamma interaction cross section expected from the hadronic properties of the photon can be detectable directly through the neutrino spectra of sources where relativistic protons cool in a nonthermal radiation field with a flux-density power law index of greater than or equal to -0.5. Conditions leading to spectral signatures in the gamma-ray emission of active galaxies are discussed.
