Tunguska Event: Comets, Tunguska Event: Models
Scientific paper
In relation to the conjecture proposed by Chyba et al. (1993) about the asteroidal nature of the Tunguska meteoroid, a number of related problems are considered, and the hypothesis is shown to be groundless. The inaccuracy of the theory, the underestimation of the initial values of mass and velocity of the objects discussed, and ignorance of results of field research carried out over many years in the region of the Tunguska catastrophe but which did not reveal even slight traces of stony fragments or particles are all reasons advanced for the breakdown of this hypothesis. Notions about the initial energy of the Tunguska body and the explosion energy which is more than one order of magnitude lower, are refined. Determinations of initial values of mass, velocity, and energy, made by various methods, are reviewed. The question of density of the Tunguska body is discussed. The results of calculations of heights of complete disruption carried out by three methods according to Chyba, 1993, according to Grigoryan, 1979, and according to this same theory with a correction for the simultaneous evaporation of the body are cited. The nature of the anomalous luminosity after the Tunguska fall is also discussed. It is concluded that all data favor the cometary nature of the Tunguska meteoroid.
