Scientific paper

The various theoretical and practical structures necessary for a
definition of the astronomical reference systems (BCRS, GCRS, ICRS) and
frames (ICRF) are discussed. It is argued that with increasing accuracy
the distinction between astronomical reference systems and corresponding
frames becomes increasingly problematic.
