Scientific paper

The paper deals with NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) located on the summit of the extinct volcano Mauna Kea, near the city Hilo, Hawaii. The 3-meter reflector is designed especially for observation of solar system objects, to support the space exploration program, with initial emphasis on the Voyager missions to Jupiter and Saturn. The observing windows (such as near 2 micron wavelength, where an important spectral line of hydrogen is to be found) are improved, owing to the 13,800-feet altitude of the site and the large number of clear nights. Some results of astronomic observations are examined.
