The possibility of using interplanetary spacecraft to predict the onset of geomagnetic disturbances during solar activity is explored. Geomagnetic indices such as AE, AU, AL, ap, Kp, and Dst have been shown to have a high correlation with solar wind features such as the southward component of the solar wind magnetic field, the bulk velocity, and the variance of the magnetic field. It is asserted that since the delay of geomagnetic response to the onset of solar activity is on the order of an hour, interplanetary spacecraft detecting the changes in solar wind parameters could broadcast advance warnings to allow measures to be taken to provide for effects of spacecraft charging, on communications, and on long distance power lines and pipelines.
