For the Moon, a particular type of crustal material which is characterized by high enrichments in elements which are incompatible in most major rock forming minerals was shown to have remarkably constant relative abundances of the two incompatible elements Sm and Nd. This feature suggests a common origin for all of this material as a residual liquid left after extensive fractional crystallization of a single large magma reservoir. Nd isotopic data show that although this material was extruded onto the surface of the Moon 3.85 AE ago; its characteristic relative abundance of incompatible elements were produced by differentiation which occurred approximately 4.36 AE ago. In contrast to the Moon, Nd and Sr isotopic data for terrestrial ocean ridge basalts indicate that the incompatible element depletion which characterizes these basalts was formed in their mantle sources only about 1.1 AE ago. An alternate interpretation of this age is that it is an average differentiation age for suboceanic mantle which has been undergoing continual internal mixing.
