Spectra of Comet Bowell (1980b) were obtained at a heliocentric distance
of 7.17 AU by the use of the Kitt Peak National Observatory Intensified
Image-Dissector Scanner on the 2.1-m telescope on April 16, 1980. The
comet had a halo at least 12 arcsec across and yet, the spectrum shows
no molecular emission. This indicates the comet was extremely active.
