Observations of solar-type activity, including spots, flares and activity cycles, in stars other than the sun are reviewed. Limits to the detectability of solar-type activity on other stars are considered, and the types of stars on which activity is expected to be observable are discussed, including the faint K-M dwarfs and other stars exhibiting differential rotation and dynamo action. Observations of manifestations of activity in stellar photospheres, chromospheres and coronas are then presented, with particular attention given to those obtained with the IUE and HEAO satellites in the previously unexplored EUV and X-ray regions, respectively. Possible evidence of activity cycles in RS CVn stars, BY Dra stars, and a sample of stars of spectral type from F5 to M2 is discussed. Finally, recent progress in the formulation of radically different theories of stellar atmospheric formation and dynamics in terms of dynamo models which can account for both solar and stellar activity is surveyed.
