Scientific paper

The Large Area Telescope (LAT), one of the two instruments on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, has observed an increasing gamma-ray flux from a source ~1 degree from the Galactic plane. Preliminary analysis indicates that, over the two-week period ending February 1, 2010, the source had a gamma-ray flux of (0.5 ± 0.06) x 10-6 photons / cm2 / s, with a photon index of 2.4 ± 0.1. The preliminary flux estimate for the one-day period February 1, 2010 UTC is (0.8 ± 0.3) x 10-6 photons / cm2 / s, with a photon index of 2.2 ± 0.2.
