This paper investigates the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction in the ultraviolet-wavelength range observed by the TD-1 satellite. This study differs from previous ones in two important respects. First, the sets of identical stars employed to find reddening are determined more precisely than before and consist only of normal, nonsupergiant stars. Second, a multivariate analysis of variance technique in an unbiased coordinate system is used to obtain the wavelength dependence of reddening. This is an optimal technique and reveals two distinct variances in the UV spectra of "identical" stars well beyond the expected stellar mismatch error. I proceed on the assumption that both of the observed variances are of interstellar origin. By imposing very general observational constraints on which linear combinations of the two reddening curve are possible, the following conclusions are drawn. First, no acceptable combination is completely gray in the visible. Second, no allowed combination is compatible with the currently available theoretical forms of graphite extinction. This is because allowed combinations with a strong 2175-Å feature also have appreciable visible extinction. Third, a relatively featureless combination is possible which, for fixed B - V, accounts for most of the extinction in the range 5.5 μ-1 < λ-1 <7.0 μ-1. Fourth, there is no a priori reason for hypothesizing more than two species of grains to explain ultraviolet extinction.
